Bone broth how I love thee; let me count the ways. Bone broth is pure magic! Now you are probably thinking, “What the heck is bone broth, that does not even sound appetizing, like why would anyone want to eat that?” Bone broth is not as weird as you think (or maybe it is), but let’s get down to the root of it so you can start enjoying the wonders of bone broth.
If you have been following along with my Instagram for the past year you have seen me talk about some of my Strange Diet foods I consume to help making living with Hashimoto’s Disease more bearable and eventually being able to go into remission. If you are on Instagram and want to check out my previous talks go to the Strange Diet Highlights. One of the items I talk often about or suggest to Hashimoto Warriors who are asking for suggestions is bone broth.
Bone broth is similar to chicken stock that you use typically for soups and such but it’s made from animal bones and tissue (usually cattle or chicken). It takes a while to make bone broth, but that’s because all good things take time. It can take up to 12 to 48 hours to boil all the goodies out of the bones; times vary depending on who you ask. Bone broth takes all the nutrients and collagen and puts them in the broth, which will then benefit you because there are a ton of benefits from consuming it. As the social media wizards would say, “It’s trending,” in the superfood world and it truly deserves to be because it can help those of us with autoimmune diseases as well as everyone else!
Some drink bone broth from a cup, some drink it sitting next to your pup. Others like me, well I use it to replace traditional stock when making soups. Sorry, I couldn’t continue the rhyme.
Now that I have convinced you to at least investigate bone broth more, I guess I can reveal the benefits of this delicious broth.
- Helps heal your gut
If you have an autoimmune disease, there’s a good chance you have a leaky gut too. Bone broth helps heal your stomach and repair your gut lining. Everyone wants a happy gut!
- Can relieve joint pain
My fellow Hashimoto’s Warriors feel joint pain, it’s a common symptom with good old Hashimoto’s Disease. Do you suffer from arthritis? Bone broth helps with relieving the pain because it helps with inflammation!
- Keep skin looking youthful
Did we just find the fountain of youth? Possibly! Since bone broth is jam packed with collagen, your skin will be happy, happy, happy!
Now I could easily go on and on about the benefits because there are more than just those three I mention. When our bodies are happy, it’s hard not to feel like your best self.
Here’s the thing, I know we all don’t have the time to make bone broth from scratch. Bone broth has been around since the caveman days, and we don’t have time to drop everything, hunt our food and boil it for dinner every night. There are a ton of companies who make pre-made bone broth, such as Trader Joe’s, Sprout’s Farmers Market, Bonafide Provisions, Pacific, and so on and so on. There are so many brands, take a look! Remember some are better than others, but do your own investigating and if you’ve tried bone broth before let me know your favorite brand!
Enjoy some bone broth, add a little pep to your step! Make your gut happy and kick out inflammation. Do some research and let me know what benefit blew you away the most!
