The Wonderful World of Dairy Free: Let’s talk Vegan Cheese

What do you call cheese that’s not your cheese? Nacho cheese! I love a good cheesy joke. All jokes aside, I’ve been dairy-free for a while now to help in my fight against Hashimoto’s Disease. I get the same response when I tell people I gave up all dairy as a part of my Strange Diet. Everyone always asks me, “How do I live without cheese?” 

Cheese has become a staple in the American diet. There are times when I’m wine tasting where I miss eating cheese; however, I have felt so much better since giving up dairy! I’ve felt many benefits – For one it’s helped ease my anxiety, and also don’t get uncomfortably bloated anymore. It was worth it to give up the cheese. 

Recently I’ve been getting a ton of requests for dairy alternative products. There’s no better place to start than everyone’s favorite dairy product: cheese! Here are my favorite brands that make a good vegan “cheese”. All these brands have gluten, dairy and soy free options; however, some of these brand’s products do use soy so always read your labels! 

Miyoko’s Creamery: I didn’t realize vegan cheese could taste so good! The majority of this brand uses cashew as the base of their vegan cheese making it extra creamy (like the traditional ‘cheese’). This brand makes my favorite vegan cream cheese. You have to check out the vegan mozzarella – you won’t miss the other stuff on your pizza. 

Daiya: It wasn’t until I met Daiya that I realized that vegan cheese can actually taste amazing! I truly love this brand; you might remember me talking about this brand a few times on this blog, such as in, Let Them Eat Cake! There’s a good chance if you order a vegan pizza, the cheese is probably Daiya! I love the cheese shreds, especially the Cheddar Cutting Board Shreds! Perfect addition to any dish you want to make a little cheesy. 

Follow Your Heart: I was first introduced to Follow Your Heart in New York City. You might recall me talking about this brand in my blog, Take a Bite out of the Big Apple, specifically at Bareburger. These cheese slices rock! They taste identical to traditional cheese slices so when I’m grilling, I use these vegan slices on my burgers. I also love the grated parmesan – pairs perfectly with homemade garlic “cheese” bread and your favorite pasta dish! If you’re from the southwest like me, sour cream is a big deal, Follow Your Heart has their own vegan version. 

I might come off as cheesy, but I can’t imagine my life without one of these three brands! Who needs the “traditional cheese” when you can enjoy the vegan alternatives? These three brands each have an amazing line of products and are constantly coming out with something new and exciting. Have you tried any of these brands? Let me know!
