A year and a half ago I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s Disease, an autoimmune disease where my thyroid works slower than it should. When your thyroid does not work properly it causes a few symptoms, including: sensitivity to cold, constant tiredness, unexpected weight gain, muscle aches, anxiety, and depression.
When I was diagnosed, I went to see a specialist, and was told that changing my diet would have no effect whatsoever. All I needed to do was take this thyroid medication and all my issues would be solved. This medication, however, completely altered my personality. I had energy, but was suffering terrible chest pain. It also skyrocketed my anxiety. After a month being on this medication, on my 23rd birthday, I had the worse anxiety attack of my life. It was so bad we actually thought I was having a heart attack. Being 23 years old and in a hospital bed really puts things into perspective. It turned out my body had a terrible reaction to the medication. My boyfriend Nate had been doing some research and found that people were able to cure this disease by changing their diets to a gluten free, dairy free and soy free lifestyle. The day after my hospital visit I ended things with the endocrinologist that had prescribed me the bad medication and changed my diet that day.
Fast-forward a year later: I have lost 45 pounds, I enjoy cooking, my seasonal allergies are gone, I am not on a thyroid medication, and I am thriving and enjoying life more than I ever had before. I have a supportive endocrinologist team and they are seeing improvements. I am another day closer to curing this disease. All the glory to God – I truly believe that this was a blessing in disguise; I needed a wakeup call to get my health together. I have never enjoyed life more than I do now. A huge thank you for my family and friends for all their support, and thank you to @natedoesinsta for standing by my side through every test and loving me through the good and the bad – you are a true example of 1 Corinthians 13:4-8. To my fellow #Hashimoto’s warriors who answered my questions about how to live life with this, thank you for your love and support; you all inspired me – we will find a cure!
Disclaimer: This is my personal experience and I cannot guarantee you will experience the same results. I’m not recommending discarding your medication and suggest you do your own research before venturing into a natural healing approach. I hope sharing my story will inspire others.
